To his many admirers, Gough Whitlam single-handedly drove Australia into modernity as a self-confident, open and fairer nation with his vision and legendary charisma. But within three short and tumultuous years, the Whitlam Labor Government was thrown from office – first by the Queen's envoy, and later by the voting public. Join acclaimed journalist and author Troy Bramston in conversation with Political Editor of The Australian Financial Review, Phil Coorey, to discuss Gough Whitlam: Vista of the New. Drawing on never before discovered archives and interviews with over 100 people, Troy has delivered a commanding biography that illuminates the brilliance and blind spots of Whitlam. This book shines new light on the grand triumphs and devastating mistakes made by Whitlam and his Cabinet, as well as the role played by Malcolm Fraser, in an era that redefined a nation. Fifty years after the dismissal of Whitlam's government, this captivating, and at times shocking, new assessment could not be more timely. Hear this unmissable conversation in the very building where it all went down!

Troy Bramston is a senior writer with The Australian, reporting on politics, policy and popular culture. He is an award-winning and best-selling author or editor of twelve books, including Gough Whitlam: The Vista of the New,  Bob Hawke: Demons and Destiny, Robert Menzies: The Art of Politics  and Paul Keating: The Big Picture Leader. He co-wrote two groundbreaking books on the 1975 dismissal of the Whitlam government. Troy is a member of the Library Council of the State Library of NSW and the National Archives of Australia Advisory Council. He was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2001.
