Sure, crime is a popular genre, but Canberra seems to have more crime writers per head of population than other states. Here to represent themselves and their compatriots from the heart of ‘Canberra Crime’ we have Michael Brissenden (The Dust), Jack Heath (Kill Your Boss) and Alison Booth (Death at Booroomba) to talk about their latest works, why they love the genre and how it allows them to explore history, human relationships, and the dynamics of outback towns. Moderated by SA crime writer Lainie Anderson (Murder on North Terrace).
Alison Booth has published eight novels. Death at Booroomba is her first murder mystery. She is an award-winning emeritus professor at the Australian National University, a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and has published extensively in scientific journals.
Michael Brissenden is an author and journalist. He has written both non-ficton and fiction. He has published four crime thrillers, The List, Dead Letters, Smoke and the most recent Dust published in 2025. Before becoming a full time writer Michael was a political journalist and foreign correspondent with the ABC for 35 years.
Jack Heath is the award-winning author of forty books for children and adults. He was born in Sydney in 1986 and has lived in Canberra since 1996. He wrote his first novel in high school and sold it to a publisher at age 18. In 2018 his first crime novel for adults, Hangman, was a smash-hit in Australia and has since been translated into French, German, Russian and Serbian. It was voted one of the 101 best books of all time by Dymocks Booklovers, and TV rights were optioned by Disney.
