Join Lachlan Strahan, the always-curious diplomat, to launch his memoir of thirty years living and working on the foreign affairs frontline. Lachlan takes us behind the diplomatic curtain, from Germany and China to Pyongyang and on to India and the Solomon Islands, as he shows how the manoeuvrings of nations can come down to unexpected events and decisions made under the pump. Working directly with a series of Foreign Ministers and Prime Ministers, he endeavoured to put Australia's position coherently and persuasively, no matter what political pantomimes and upheavals were occurring. One of our foremost experts on India, China, the Korean Peninsula and South Pacific, in discussion with acclaimed journalist Mark Kenny, this is a can't-miss session for anyone curious about Australia's place in the world.

Lachlan Strahan is a historian and former diplomat. Across a 30-year diplomatic career, he was involved in grappling with some of Australia’s biggest international challenges, from managing China’s rise, growing a relationship with India at a tense time, and handling the repercussions of Beijing’s security agreement with Solomon Islands, to tackling climate change, countering weapons of mass destruction and terrorism, defending human rights and coordinating the search for MH370. Lachlan is the author of Australia’s China, Day of Reckoning, and Justice in Kelly Country, which was shortlisted for the 2023 Prime Minister’s Award for History.
